Untitled (Surround) is a series photographing the suburban landscape around my family home in Yokohama. The images show neither a special place nor a particular event, but the everyday environment of the Japanese suburbs. Houses, roads, and the gaps between buildings appear as familiar elements within the frame.
The series began in 2011 and was the first body of work I produced using a digital camera. The photographs are taken with a telephoto lens and finished with an intentionally shifted white balance. All of them are composed vertically.
The landscapes shown here convey no particular meaning or function as symbols. They are quietly recorded while remaining impossible to fully grasp.
